Sunrise Alarm
Sunrise Alarm
Do you have the answers to the following chicken-type questions?

1 Do chickens yawn when they are tired or bored?
2. Do chickens get hen-pecked?
3 Does a married chicken farmer get hen pecked?
4 A hen with a sense of humor that lays an egg, will it hatch a cornish hen?
5. A hen that lays a cracked egg and after it is hatched, will it be a cukoo bird?
6. Roosters that are too old to cackle at the sunrise, do they use Alarm Clocks or pose for weather vanes?
7. When you see eggs in a container that reads from cage-free hens, does it mean the hens were not incarcinated?

Have fun
Taking the advice of my fiance I am back for awhile.

Absolutely ‘YES’ to each and every one of those questions, John. Particularly the rooster and Alarm Clock one (mine was set for 5:15, and didn’t go off till 8:48–was supposed to bring daughter for road test in son’s car–didn’t make it).

Sunrise Eyes

I’m dreaming; there is no doubt.  I walk as if in slow motion along a damp and lone path, enclosed by leafless ancient trees that seem to guide me in what l hope is paradises direction.  As l walk the dampness underneath my feet soon becomes wet and shortly after water rises above my knees and then to my waist.  It is cold but surprisingly refreshing, the current strengthens and l suddenly fall.  At that moment l awake, my dream is over.

Fate had taken over; my dreams along with my camera had been destroyed. One much anticipated year later l returned to the bell top mountain in Thailand’s Northeast province of Loei.  Many along the way had told me that l had come at just the right time.  I was expecting fields of flowers, gushing waterfalls and misty morning sunrises; my camera and l were ready for anything.

I arrived in the early morning and prepared for my 4-hour accent to the top.  She didn’t make it easy for me and the walk soon become a crawl.  Pain and pleasure become one as muscles burned and my heart strengthened with every anticipated step closer to her top. A grueling 4 hours later and one too many acidic star fruits a small victory had been claimed, l thought of how Sir Edmund Hilary must of felt as he reached the peak of Everest, l hoped it was similar to mine.

As l walked on a much appreciated flat ground l remembered what people had told me of Phu Kradungs natural beauty, of it’s lush green fields, gushing falls and wildflowers further than the eye could see.  So far l had seen none of these things and every excited step forward my eyes and heart became more and more disappointed.  The first day l wondered aimlessly around in search of some beauty, not a single photo was taken.

The following morning my plans for a sunrise shoot at the much talked about Nok Aen Cliff only 2kms from camp was once again spoiled.  The previous nights sleep if that’s what you could call it had caused me to miss my internal alarm clock (which is never late) and almost miss my rendezvous with the waking sun.  A quick decision had to be made, run and perhaps l get lucky to catch a glimpse of sunrise or go back to a much-unsatisfied sleep.  I chose the first option and 8 minutes later, sweating in a very cold 8 degrees Celsius l arrived at Lok Aen.  Luck was not on my side and l was unexpectedly greeted by a swarm of other early morning risers.  A clear shot of the morning sun was not going to be possible and instead l sat there and watched the first of the suns rays bath the distant peaks in an orange light.  My patience was wearing thin. Later that morning l ventured off yet again in the wilderness, this time in search of a picturesque waterfall.  Around 2km Northwest of camp l came upon Pen Pob Mai Waterfall, where’s the water?  The rainy season had seemed to have finished a little earlier than l expected leaving only a trickle of water on what would have been a beautiful cascading waterfall.

I pushed on in hope that the next waterfall would be better, the miracle wasn’t to be.  At this moment l thought l had been cursed.  I lay there near the small trickle of water and fell asleep.  When l awoke the afternoon light was shinning and l decided it was best that l hurry back to camp before the sunset.  As l made my self pitied walk back to camp l heard a birds voice in the near distance calling me in its direction.  Shortly after there in front of me was my first decent photograph. A beautiful little area with wild yellow grass, small white flowers and unusual rock formations, all of this in the warm afternoon light. I decided to keep following this path, it lead me through some vast grasslands, gorgeous little streams and some spectacular trees.  The light was dull again and l would have to come back the following morning to photograph what I’d seen.  I slept the night alone at Lom Sak Cliff 8kms from camp.

The next morning l awoke early to await the morning sun, this time l was on time and there was not a soul in sight.  The rest of Phu Kradungs inhabitants had flocked like sheep to the cliff on the opposite side of the mountain.  I walked only a small distance to a rising that overlooked a large plain with Phu Kradungs famous trees in the distance.

Looking east towards the sun l waited patiently until the first colored light of crimson and orange appeared as a thin line on the horizon.  The location and light were ideal and fate this time was on my side with Phu Kradung revealing her true potential to me.  This was my last 2hours on the mountain and finally l had returned to my dream.

The moral to the story is don’t expect too much and you will never be disappointed. As far as entertainment and activities are concerned there aren’t any, why would you need them in a place as magical as this.  Nature in any form will give you the mental, physical and even spiritual fulfillment one could ever need.

Phu Kradung National Park Is about 7-8hours North-east of Bangkok and can be reached by either car or bus.  A bus with aircon will take you directly to the park and costs

about 300b from Morchit station.  Once you arrive at Phu Kradung an entry fee (for preserving the park) of 200b for foreigners and 20b (a little unfair) for Thai residents is charged.  Sleeping bags and tents can be provided for rent for a very nominal fee.  For the more luxurious traveler small cabins with bathrooms are available for rent.  If you forgot to bring some food and scared you may starve to death on top of the mountain, don’t worry to much as there are a number of small restaurants providing some tasty Thai dishes.
