How do you become a certified security alarm technician?
I am interested in working with security systems, but I am not sure if I need to take courses or go to school. I hear there is a good amount of money in this profession. If anyone who has worked in a similar field, please help me with how to get started, I can’t find a alarm technician job that does not require experience. Please help.
I work for a security integrator in the North East US. That being said I do not work, or gain anything from any websites of companies listed below.
My role in my company has changed over the five years, but I have been active in almost all areas of operations with my current company. Currently I am the Engineering Supervisor heading up system pricing and design so my knowledge point may differ from guys who work in the field.
First you must realize that many companies run differently. Some work with residential and other only work commercial. Some specialize in certain “fields” of the security alarm profession. The four major “fields” that are in the profession are: Intrusion/Burglar Alarm, Access Control, CCTV (Cameras), and Fire Alarm systems. There are many other system you maybe asked to work on. Depending on the company you may only work on one or two systems types. Other companies may call on you to work any system they provide.
Many of the techs we currently have never worked in the industry before being hired. Many companies, like mine, don’t always advertise for entry level techs, but are always willing to interview interested canidates. This is because training someone “in house” can benefit both parties. You get training and teh company gets a tech who thinks like the company. Some experienced techs have a hard time switching companies since the products and philosphies differ. A new to the industry tech can quickly succeed since they have no prior knowledge.
The most successful “green” canidates have had expereince in PCs, networks, construction, or other low voltage systems (Like telephones). Having no experience with tools is usually a hard sell. The best way to get your foot in the door is to do as much learning before hand as possible.
Most techincal schools have EST (Electronic Systems Technician) training. Also since the industry is becoming more IP based look into computer network training.
Here are some organizations that deal with training and certifing those in the security alarm field:
Security Industry Association: http://www.siaonline.org/
National Systems Contractors Association: http://www.nsca.org/
National Training Center: http://www.nationaltrainingcenter.net/main.xml
National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies: http://www.nicet.org/
This organization focus more on those in the field already, but can give some insight into the backgrounds of the industry.

Do You Really Need A Home Security Alarm Systems
The world we live in is filled with robbery and crime due to evident differences of classes in our society. Everyday we read in the papers about burglaries and other sorts of crimes. However, a way to protect our homes against burglaries and other crimes is by installing home security alarm systems.
Home systems are one of the effective ways in protecting our homes and families. Installing home security alarm systems in our homes will make robber, burglars and other criminals think twice. The home security alarm systems these days are more sophisticated and highly advanced. The word security means a condition of being protected against any threat or harm. Home Alarm Systems are easy to operate. These home alarm systems have various interconnected sensors and control units.
Home systems are equipped to detect fire, burglar and any intrusion. The sophistication of home security alarm systems ranges from noisemakers to a more complex systems. When an unauthorized entry is detected, the home system sends a signal to the homemonitoring company or to the local law enforcement agency. In some cases like fire, the security Alarm System will then trigger an alarm to notify the occupants and then dials the local fire department. In other home systems, a sprinkler system is activated to contain a fire or slow down its progress.
The most important aspect in having a home security alarm system is that in time of emergencies like burglary, carbon monoxide poisoning or fire, the proper authorities are notified. Or in some security alarm systems, the security monitoring company employs specialist to determine the course of action needed on a particular emergency. No one compromises security, that is for sure. But now, danger have gone to such a level that padlocks, chains, fences and even doors and shuttered windows can not really afford a respite against such a looming threat.
Some home systems are monitored twentyfour hours a day by its local monitoring stations. When the security alarm system is set off, the monitoring station will contact the homeowner by telephone to find out if The Alarm is false or not. In such case, the monitoring company uses a password to confirm that the one answering the telephone is not an intruder. The monitoring station will then contact the local law enforcement agency if necessary. Having an efficient and reliable home security alarm system is an effective way to protect your home and to provide you security at all times.
