What is the best home security system for a renter? Wireless? Do you have to have a phone line?

I need a cost effective burglar Alarm System. I rent so I need something I can take with me when I leave. Do I need a monitoring service? Can you have a wireless system with no phone line? Is it better to buy a DIY system online and then purchase monitoring separately?

You should check out http://ucontrol.com. They have this cool box that you plug into any existing alarm system. It gives you redundant monitoring over broadband, cellular and a phone line – so if the robber cuts your phone line, you;re are still in good shape. It also lets you control and monitor your alarm system remotely from the web or your cell phone. Best part is you can take the box with you when you move and plug it into another system at your next location.

Home Security During the Holidays

The holidays are a time for good will and cheer, but they are also a time for increased consumption and displays of wealth. The latter two are to house burglars as blood is to sharks. Whether you will be home or away for the holidays, it is a great time to be thinking again about your complete approach to home security while also taking a couple of extra “seasonal” precautions.

Above all, remember the importance of appearances. Thieves are lazy in that they look for the easy target, which generally means a house that appears unoccupied, exceptionally easy to access, and/or exceptionally well endowed with expensive goodies. Your goal, then, should be to make the house look occupied, fortified, and reserved in terms of material wealth.

Here are some reminders and ideas that will help to keep your holidays safe and merry:

Keep curtains drawn in the room with the Christmas tree and gifts to prevent prying, tempted eyes from filling up with cartoon dollar signs.

Use timers and have someone collect newspapers and garbage if you go away.

Don’t leave keys for visiting friends or family under mats or in flowerpots. Leave them with a neighbor if possible.

If going away for a while, turn down a loud telephone ringer to reduce the chances that someone will “hear” your absence.

Make sure any sheds or external structures are securely locked and tools, bikes, and outdoor equipment secured or put away.

If you are running extension cords out of the house through windows for exterior lighting, be sure that windows are properly secured before going away for any significant amount of time.

Avoid putting your last name on front yard displays or on the mailbox—an enterprising thief with your name can call the house to confirm whether or not you are home. This goes for all times of the year, and it may be a good idea to unlist your number altogether.

Keep telephone messages vague if you are going away for the holidays. Strangers would love to know you are in Bermuda for three weeks, but it really isn’t any of their business.

Make sure outdoor lighting sensors are in working order. If you are mounting an over-the-top Christmas lights display and will be heading out of town, make sure ahead of leaving that the overload will not short out any fuses which could compromise your automatic lighting systems. It would be a shame, and a security risk, to leave the house conspicuously dark while you are vacationing for two weeks.

If making a Christmas list, consider asking for a home alarm system. While common sense and good preparation are great steps towards securing your home against would-be intruders, a good home alarm is the cornerstone of a complete home protection plan. Easy-to-install DIY Home Alarm Systems are on the market with an array of customizing options and at affordable prices, but for complete assurance you may want to go with a professionally installed system that includes 24-hour monitoring, not only for break-ins, but for fire and medical emergencies as well.
