Genius Alarm
Is there a program you can download that alarms you if you’re downloading a copyright material?

For example.

You’re downloading a file. And before you download it….”the program” pops up and lets you know if that file is copyright. I think such a program would be genius…however..not sure if any such program exist.

Common sense is really the only judge for that. I don’t know of any program that will tell you automatically if something is copyrighted material.

Talk To Kids About Social Networking Home Security Risks

It may be a bit amusing to most parents how invested kids and teens are in their social networking pages.  There is a lot of desire amongst younger generations these days to be constantly connected to friends, and constantly updating the world as to what they are thinking, doing, and feeling.  Not only are kids and teens communicating largely online, but they are sharing personal information, photographs, blog entries, and more with anyone and everyone connected to the internet.  While most of us think about home security systems and deadbolts as important home security choices, what the family does online can be just as big a threat to the security of your family and property.  Just like there are various levels of security for the home, there are various levels of security online. The two may be far more related than most parents believe.  In order to keep everyone safe and secure, talk to kids and teens, and/or follow these valuable social networking safety tips for yourself.

Keep Personal Info Off Your Page.  There are places on most social networking sites to post information like your address, phone number, email address, school, occupation, and other personal details.  Anyone who can read the last name on your mailbox, has seen your face, and can use the internet is able to cross reference to your social networking page to get your exact address, phone number, activities and work schedule.  Especially for those living alone this can be extremely dangerous.  For example, it doesn’t take a genius to look up your employer’s phone number, and give a quick call to see if you are there (and not at home) before smashing in the back door of your house.  Avoid leaving a trail of breadcrumbs, and delete personal info (or at least up your privacy settings) to protect home security, leading us to the next big online security tip.

Make Use of Privacy Settings.  Most social networking sites have privacy settings that only allow certain users to see certain aspects of your page, or your family members’ pages.  Advise kids to use these security settings so that only trusted friends and family are able to access their most personal information.  Otherwise, anyone with access to the internet can find out anything they want to about you, your family members, and your lives.  You wouldn’t leave all the doors and windows in your home wide open, inviting anyone to “come on in.”  Don’t do the same to your home security by leaving wide open amounts of internet information lying around.

Avoid Play by Play Updates.  Teens especially should be wary about constantly updating the world of their whereabouts.  While knowing exactly where your kids are may be useful in some safety situations, in others, when your teenager is home alone for example, there can be many clues given that could easily fall into the wrong hands.  Say a teen writes “babysitting my bratty brother again.”  The teen has left clues that he or she is in the home, without adult supervision.  This lets any clever criminal know exactly what he is up against before attempting entry.  Another classic example is saying “in Barbados (or sub in other top vacation destination) until April 20th, reach me on my cell #555 456 4567!” over a status update.  While it’s nice to rub it in your hundreds of contacts’ noses that you are sunning yourself while they browse social networking sites from their boring office jobs, keep in mind that anyone who searches your name online is privy to this information.  Keep to yourself these details about the fact your house or apartment is unoccupied, or only share such info with close family and friends whenever possible to keep your home security up to snuff!
