Would you read my book?
I have been a part time musician & songwriter, a SCUBA diver, a pilot (Have my Commercial Licence) & have worked in the Security Business for more than 35 yrs, (Installing Burglar Alarms, cctv, etc) & ran my own business in that field for the last 15 yrs.
I know I have a book in me, but everytime I sit down to write it, I start wondering if anybody would really be interested in what I have to say.
The real question is NOT if you had an interesting life, which clearly you have so far. The question is “are you a compelling writer.” Can you make people CARE about your experiences and about the fact that you’ve had that interesting life. Can you put it together in such a way that things seem pertinent to other peoples’ lives, vital to the times we live in. Can you convince people YOU care and that those around you had an interesting response to what you said, did, or experienced.
David Sedaris made people fall off their sofas laughing over a story about his sister bringing a street walker home for Christmas dinner. Now, Sedaris is a great guy. But this was not a life-changing moment for anyone. It was just a minor, every day stupidity. J.M. Coetzee wrote an unbelievablly timeless piece of fiction about villagers going about the simple act of preparing for a tribe of warriors that may never have even existed (Waiting for the Barbarians). It’s pertinent to this day and once you start, impossible to put down.
On the other hand, I’ve read books about rescue at sea missions that made me yawn. I’ve read horror stories, tales of space missions, so dull that I couldn’t finish them.
Yes! You have at least one book in you! You’ve got a creative life (musically), you’re adventurous, you’ve more than likely seen a lot of whacky things in the security business, you know a great deal about the business world. Oh, and the flying is always fascinating, risky, adventurous, and makes people drool with jealousy…almost everyone secretly (or not so secretly) wants to be a pilot.
You’ve got a memoir or two in there and likely some fiction as well. I don’t know from what you say whether you’re a writer or not, but it doesn’t matter because you can over come it if you’re not.
First, you can become one if you’re not one already. Start writing, go to free workshops, take classes, use your family and friends as critics, get an editor, write other things besides your main work as practice, etc. (I’m a technical writer for a living). Always, ALWAYS keep a journal.
Second, you can get a partner as in “The stories of Joe Pilot as told by Esmerelda Writer.” Or you can go even further and simply have someone else write it for you ghost-writer style.
Yes, people are interested in what you have to say. You just have to say it to them in the way that MAKES them interested. Make sense?
