Alarm Oclock
Alarm Oclock

Does anybody know these lyrics ?
Oh, I could hide neath the wings
Of the bluebird as she sings.
The six oclock alarm would never ring.
Whoops its ringing and I rise,
Wipe the sleep out of my eyes.
My shavin razors cold and it stings.

Are you a Semi-somniac?
It’s estimated that up to 30 million people suffering from semi-somnia go without any treatment until it has a truly detrimental effect on their lives. Having the ability to recognise it in ourselves is half the battle.
Experts define Semi-somnia as ‘disturbed or fitful sleep’ caused by the stresses and strains of everyday living. Symptoms include: -
- Difficulty getting out of bed in a morning.
- Wondering where the night dissappeared to.
- Needing to sleep during the day but unable to get to sleep easily at night
Many people admit to waking in the morning every bit as tired as when we went to bed, however, they don’t address the problem and dismiss it as simply a bi-product of their demanding lifestyle. The massive increase in semi-somnia is probably due to our 24 hour society and our lack of understanding of how much our emotional and physical health are entirely dependent on a quality nights sleep. “There just aren’t enough hours in the day” rings more true for those people who are sacrificing sleep to fit more things in their lives. Poor quality sleep leads to irritability, increased susceptibility to disease and even depression but for people who are long term sufferers the consequences can be disastrous because they are at much greater risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease or having a stroke.
Just over a century ago people had, on average, nine hours sleep each night. Nowadays this has gone down to around seven hours, with almost a third of us having to manage on less than six! A more alarming statistic is that one in five road accidents is caused by people who are tired, which is even more than the number caused by drunk drivers.
Of course, not everyone needs eight hours of sleep every night. If you wake up feeling refreshed and can stay alert for the whole of the day, you are achieving the right balance. An easy way to check is to ask yourself how alert and energised you feel at eleven oclock in the morning and again at two oclock in the afternoon. On a score of one to ten, with one being not at all alert and ten being at the top of your form, below six means you probably need more sleep and by 2pm you’ll be more than ready for a nap or a cup of very strong coffee to keep you awake!.
